I recently came across the following article about housing provision.
It is these sorts of initiatives that I would like to learn more about, and become involved in. I love the empowerment and provision for those less fortunate, or with less opportunities to access quality design. Like this article says, it is not about swooping in and trying to ‘save the poor from their plight’ as the knowledgeable force. That is not it. It is about using our skills to provide scope for more than the minimum.
As designers and creative individuals we have the privilege of seeing things differently. We can bounce ideas around, and brainstorm solutions and ideas which may be outside the box.
As individuals we can respect others; their experiences and their needs. By communicating, and responding to specific needs and desires when working in communities we can look for ways to respond. As well as looking at how to improve, and aspire for the future.
We can also relinquish ownership – so that our designs are for the user and are accessible and manageable by them, rather than forever ours. They can last, grow, adapt and change.
The article above is about providing homes, and community. While giving space for changes and adaptation. So that these new dwellings grown in individuality and personality, and respond to the needs of the inhabitants. It is not a poor project for the poor. It is a project for the empowerment of people.
